Garlic (Allium sativum) is a high-value spice crop extensively cultivated in Gujarat, particularly in districts like Jamnagar, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Junagadh. It serves as a crucial cash crop for small and marginal farmers, offering significant economic returns when managed with precision. Garlic thrives in the cool, dry climate of Gujarat’s winter season. The crop requires well-drained, fertile, sandy loam or medium black soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. In Gujarat, the cultivation cycle typically begins in October and extends through March. The success of garlic farming depends heavily on the selection of high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties like G-41, G-50, and local Jamnagari selections. Farmers must focus on balanced fertilization, specifically ensuring adequate potassium and sulfur application, which enhances the pungency and shelf life of the bulbs. Irrigation management is critical; excessive moisture during the bulb development stage can lead to fungal infections and rotting. As a major player in the Indian spice market, Gujarat-grown garlic is highly sought after for its quality and flavor profile. Post-harvest management, including proper curing in shaded, well-ventilated areas, is essential to reduce moisture content and prevent post-harvest losses. Market dynamics in APMCs are influenced by bulb size, skin color, and overall cleanliness. By adopting scientific practices such as drip irrigation, mulching, and integrated pest management (IPM) for thrips and mites, farmers can significantly increase their yield per hectare. The integration of technology in monitoring soil moisture and nutrient levels is becoming a game-changer for the 'Smart Khedut' community. With increasing demand in both domestic and international markets, garlic remains a cornerstone of agricultural prosperity in the Saurashtra and North Gujarat regions.
