Strategic Collaboration Launches PINS Irrigation Network to Transform Agriculture in Okhamandal

In a significant move to bolster agricultural resilience in water-scarce regions, the Gujarat Green Revolution Company (GGRC) and the Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) have officially launched the Pressurized Irrigation Network System (PINS) project. The initiative, inaugurated in Rajpara village in the Devbhumi Dwarka district, follows a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at modernizing water distribution infrastructure. By integrating advanced engineering with local agricultural needs, the project seeks to provide a reliable, efficient water supply to the command areas of the Bhimgaja and Mithikhari Dams.

The project is designed to serve as a model for sustainable resource management, targeting the specific challenges of the Okhamandal region. By covering six villages—Rangasar, Nageshwar, Goriyali, Rajpara, Mudvel, and Samlasar—the PINS project aims to bring approximately 800 hectares of land under high-efficiency irrigation. With over 300 farmers set to benefit directly, the initiative represents a concerted effort to transition local farming practices from traditional, often inefficient methods toward a precision-based, technology-driven framework.

Engineering Efficiency: The Mechanics of PINS

The core of the PINS project lies in its ability to minimize conveyance losses while maximizing the utility of available surface water. Unlike traditional open-canal irrigation systems, which are prone to significant water loss through evaporation and seepage, the pressurized network delivers water directly to the farm gate. This infrastructure is further integrated with drip irrigation technology, allowing farmers to apply water precisely where and when it is needed, directly to the root zone of the crops.

Dr. Ashutosh Vadawale, Senior Manager (Tech & MIS) at GGRC, emphasized that the project builds upon two decades of experience, during which the organization has brought over 25.5 lakh hectares under micro-irrigation across Gujarat. "GGRC is now pivoting toward cluster-based PINS projects to maximize the utility of surface water resources," Dr. Vadawale noted. By concentrating efforts on clusters, the initiative allows for a more scalable and manageable approach to regional water distribution. This systemic change is essential for the Okhamandal region, where rainfall variability has historically made seasonal planning difficult for local growers.

The technical integration of the network is expected to facilitate a shift in cropping patterns. With a stable and pressurized water supply, farmers are no longer restricted to monsoon-dependent crops. Instead, they can explore high-value crop varieties and increase their annual cropping intensity, effectively creating a more robust and diversified agricultural economy at the village level.

Collaborative Governance and Rural Development

The inauguration ceremony served as a forum for stakeholders from various sectors, including government officials, agricultural scientists, and local leadership. The presence of Shree Pabubha Manek, MLA, alongside representatives from the Irrigation, Agriculture, and Horticulture Departments, underscored the alignment of the project with state-level agricultural development goals. Furthermore, the involvement of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) ensures that the project is supported by the necessary scientific extension services, helping farmers optimize the new technology for their specific soil conditions.

Chintan Joshi, Head of Corporate Advocacy, Communications & CSR at Tata Chemicals, highlighted that the project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a long-term commitment to rural stability. "This initiative marks an important step toward strengthening water security," Joshi stated. By focusing on sustainable natural resource management, the partnership between GGRC and TCSRD aims to empower the farming community, ensuring that the benefits of the PINS project extend beyond immediate yield increases to foster lasting socio-economic development.
